Sun Damage Can Cause Signs of Aging

Sun damage in your skin is a lot more common than you may know. Even if you don’t get sunburnt by the sun’s ultraviolet  rays, they are still making an impact on your skin. Getting that bronze glow may look nice, but without proper precautions this bronze glow could cause early signs of aging.

Is Sun Damage Caused By UVA or UVB Rays?

UVA and UVB rays are the two most common types of ultraviolet rays from the sun. UVA rays comprise about 95% of all UV rays, while UVB only comprises 5%. In the past, most sunscreen products only protected against UVB rays as they are the cause of sunburns. When UVB rays meet your skin, they are only powerful enough to affect the top layer of skin, or epidermis.

UVA rays penetrate deeper within the skin, reaching the dermis below. Rather than causing the skin to burn, UVA rays cause the skin to tan by prompting melanin production. Melanin, the brown pigment that colours skin, is a body’s natural defence against burning. This increase in melanin production is why the lower layers of skin do not burn.

Do UVA Rays Causing Early Signs of Aging?

Though melanin is the cause behind deep tans, it is a byproduct of oxidative stress within the body. To produce melanin while tanning, the body must oxidize the amino acid tyrosine. This oxidation creates free radicals within the skin, leading to more pronounced signs of aging. Without proper protection, this can cause wrinkles and sagging skin at a young age. In addition to this, UVA rays have been observed to negatively impact collagen. Studies have found that extended exposure to the entire UV spectrum causes collagen to lose its elasticity. This loss of elasticity is what leads to wrinkles and sagging skin naturally.

How Can I Protect Myself From Sun Damage?

The best protection from the entire UV spectrum is to use broad-spectrum UV SPF products. For the best results, though, the products must be reapplied every two hours. To prevent damage from tanning though, SPF products may not be enough. Damage from dermal oxidation can also be prevented by using antioxidants.

What Is An Antioxidant?

Antioxidants are compounds that prevent oxidation within the body. They combat free radicals, the most common source of natural oxidation within the body. Free radicals cause oxidation within the body by taking electrons from other molecules within the body. Antioxidants have a spare molecule that they can give to free radicals, preventing oxidative stress in the body. They can be found in a variety of foods, including a variety of berries and dark chocolate among others.

Many diets do not provide enough natural antioxidants to slow the signs of aging, though. Tanning exposes the skin to increased amounts of sun damage, speeding up the skin’s natural aging process. This is where antioxidant supplements come in.

Sun Damage Protection With Antioxidant Supplements

Maintaining that beautiful bronze tan without worrying about sun damage from tanning sounds nearly impossible. The deeper the tan gets, the more melanin has to be produced, and the more oxidation goes on. To be able to tan without fearing the signs of aging, it is important to have an antioxidant supplement. While tanning can only happen with melanin production, the free radicals created by melanin do not have to happen.

Antioxidant supplements, like Greeniche’s Dermatrol formula, supply the body with the extra antioxidants it cannot get from food. Dermatrol contains trans-resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant that protects against free radicals while increasing collagen production. It also contains anti-inflammatory properties, making sure your skin maintains its natural beauty. Taking Dermatrol before tanning can help you maintain beautifully bronzed and youthful looking skin.
