8 Ways To Promote Mental Health

There has been a lot of talk about Mental Health these days, but exactly what does it mean to have good mental health and how do you maintain it? Mental Health is a sense of well being, it’s how we think, feel and do. Merriam-Webster defines mental health as “A state of emotional and psychological well-being in which an individual is able to use his or her cognitive and emotional capabilities, function in society, and meet the ordinary demands of everyday life.”

Mental health is just as much if not more important than physical health. Here are some simple ways to promote mental health in our everyday lives.

1. Invest in Good Friends

Good friends don’t judge or misuse friendships. They are there not just for the good times but also for the bad. They help us talk about our feelings and provide a different perspective. Good friendships take time and energy. Invest in good friendships and gently let go of the ones which bring stress and drama to your life.

2. Eat well

We are what we eat, so make healthy eating choices. Eat a wide variety of fresh food incorporating all food groups. Stay away from preservatives and processed food. An active interest in cooking your own food, promotes healthy eating. Read up ingredients list and stay informed.

3. Sleep

With so many electronic distractions in our bedrooms such as the TV, tablets and most importantly mobile phones, it can be difficult to maintain an uninterrupted sleep cycle. Sleep is however directly tied to physical and mental health. Your body and mind need the rest that sleep provides. Follow the same sleep schedule everyday and stay away from screens at least 30 minutes before you sleep. Unwind by reading a book or writing a journal.

4. Exercise

While everyone knows the benefits of exercise, we all struggle to maintain it. Don’t let another year of gym fees go to waste. Start with small steps such as taking the stairs, a brisk walk around the block or dancing on your favorite song. Start small but make sure you get some exercise three times a week.

5. Do What You Enjoy

Did gardening make you happy many years ago? Is there a musical instrument you wanted to learn? Which books do you want to finish this summer? Make time and prioritize yourself by giving yourself some time every week to do something that you truly enjoy and that inspires you.

6. Respect Your Feelings

All our feelings are important. You can’t be happy all the time. Emotions such as anger, hurt, and sadness are just as important. Emotionally strong people aren’t beaming 110 Watts smiles every day. They however respect all their feelings and are able to identify them.

7. Develop a Community

Build a community around yourself by caring for those you work with or live close by. Sense of belonging is a great tool to increase self-worth. Reach out to people and grow your community. Surround yourself with positive and inspiring people.

8. Take Care of Yourself

The most important part of good mental health is to take care your own self. Rest and rejuvenate. Take care of your soul through meditation. Take care of your physical appearance also.
