Why 2017 Is All About IIFYM

IIFYM, otherwise known as If It Fits Your Macros, is the diet trend taking 2017 by storm.

The key rule to this flexible diet: people can eat anything they like so long as it is ‘fits their macros’ is proving hugely popular among those wanting to shift a few post-Christmas pounds.

Here’s the lowdown on why IIFYM is the number one weight loss initiative for 2017…

1.It’s Not Restrictive At All



While most other dieting trends are telling people to fast, causing dangerous imbalances and deficiencies in their bodies, this one is all about eating.

There aren’t any forbidden or ‘bad’ foods that you have to avoid meaning that most dieters feel like they are eating pretty normally and can stick to their plan whether they are cooking from home, out and about or at social events.

More importantly IIFYM prevents any later health issues that can be caused by modern restrictive diets and aims to keep you happy and energised.

What’s not to love about eating your favourite foods and losing weight or reaching your muscle building goals at the same time?

2.It’s logical



Unlike so many diets which have you cutting out entire food groups, IIFYM revolves around two logical concepts. The first is establishing your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE to those in the know).

The second is establishing your personal set of daily macro (short for macronutrient) targets. Your TDEE is a calculation of how many calories your burn in 24 hours.

Most people use this formula for men: 10 x weight (kg) +6.25 x height (cm) – 5 x age (y) + 5 = Resting Energy Expenditure (REE). Or this for women: 10 x weight (kg) + 6.25 x height (cm) – 5 x age (y) – 161 = REE. Then all you do is factor this into your daily exercise routine.

To lose weight on this diet all you do is eat less than your TDEE for maintaining your current weight – simple!

3.The Eating Part Is Great



25% of your calories should come from fats. As IIFYM is flexible, dieters can adjust this macro to a level that suits their goals. Same goes for protein which is normally calculated based on your body weight.

4.It’s Healthy



The IIFYM formula advocates a calorie loss of 20% meaning there’s no sudden weight loss and your body can adapt to the changes you make.
