Feeling depressed or tired all the time and unable to get your mind set on a task? It may be that you are running on low serotonin. It is a monoamine neurotransmitter that affects and regulates our sleep, appetite, memory, learning, mood, emotional aspects of sexual health. While our brain produces it naturally, we can still sometimes fall short of the required amount.
Low serotonin levels can lead to impulsive behavior, bouts of aggression, and addictions. If it gets worse, you can have anxiety issues, panic attacks and depression. Obsessive compulsive disorder comes forth, and, in some cases, people develop suicidal tendencies. However, fortunately for us, there are many ways through which serotonin release can be increased.
A walk in the morning with a positive attitude towards life is the easiest way to get more serotonin. Exercise and sunlight are both fundamental to remaining healthy and cheerful, while research shows that small attitudinal changes toward our daily life can bring about major mood changes.

A healthy diet of nuts, seeds, eggs, cheese, salmon, turkey, pineapples, plums and other foods which are rich in tryptophan (an amino acid that breaks down into serotonin) can boost the levels as well. Although, you need to include carbohydrates in your diet for tryptophan to break, which means that you will have to get some more exercise to balance it out. And what better way to achieve balance and exercise than yoga?
Yoga poses that engage your core, help calm your nerves and produce serotonin. The full regimen with breathing exercises, meditation, relaxation, and yoga poses will help you achieve much more.
Yoga, however, balances the chemicals in your body by applying pressure on certain points. There are several postures that you can learn for different outcomes, but try this pose that helps with serotonin release by focusing on the core – the abdominal region and the emotional elements in life.
To do this, sit with your knees bent upwards and place your hand on the floor behind you with the fingers pointing towards the feet. Then, with a straight back, breathe your belly in and pull your shoulders back to widen your chest. Now lean back, keeping your back straight, and lift your feet up while keeping them level with the floor. Move your hands, without any other changes in the posture, and extend them straight out parallel to the floor – you can hold the back of your thighs for balance if need be. Finally, lengthen your legs, such that your body forms a V with your spine and legs. Breathe deeply to the count of five, release the posture, and sit straight.
Hence, a well-balanced dietary intake combined with yoga can help you overcome emotional stress and will result in mind body balance.
